“Settlers of Catan is to Monopoly what cocaine is to caffeine” 2009-09-26
By James C. Stoltz
Settlers of Catan is a highly addictive game. The robber usually prevents any one player from getting too far ahead, so no one usually loses by that much. This produces an “I almost had it!” feeling in the losers that make them instantly want to try again until they win.
For winners it is no less addictive, since the rush of winning is similar to scratching off a winning lottery ticket. There’s also a feeling of “Well I won, but was it luck or skill?” which makes them want to play again to prove to themselves that it wasn’t luck. Of course this is impossible really. There is no skill involved in Settler’s aside from an elementary understanding of probability and the realization that the city/dev card strategy is best (one notorious strategy guide online will say differently, but as a veteran of hundreds of games I know.)
One of the negative things about the game, and why I wouldn’t recommend it for kids, is that since people are competing with each other so directly through blocking with roads and the robber, and since getting blocked or robbed has such an impact, it can make people very angry and irritable with each other. I’m an emotionally mature grown man, and there have been games of Settlers that have frustrated me so much that I’ve went into a rage and broke things. It’s also not very educational. There’s nothing to be learned from this game except a simple math lesson on probability which you could teach to the average kid in ten minutes.
If you would like to play Settlers of Catan for free online against human opponents from all over the world, I’ve found that the best sites are […] and w[…]. The former site is down as of this writing but should be up again soon, the later is in Dutch, but simply click on “Aanmelden” and enter your username and email to register, select “default official island” for the original game board.
Overall Settlers is a rather mindless, sometimes frustrating, but fun and addictive game. Perhaps not the greatest choice if you want something substantial or that will require a lot of intellect, but it’s a classic, very well designed game for the masses that belongs in any board game enthusiasts collection.

“Great game” 2009-09-24
By Robin C. Campbell
Great game, helps develop reasoning and sharing skills but is directed at an older audience. I enjoy it because it is different than traditional board games!

“A fun casual game” 2009-09-24
By A. T. Reynolds (NY)
Settlers of Catan is that critically acclaimed board game, and for a reason. Game play is intricate enough for adults, but simple enough that children can play and have a good time.
A short description: Settles of Catan centers around four “countries” attempting to settle the mythical island of Catan. Players build settlements and cities through the island, vieing for resources to build their civilization. To get these resources, players take turns rolling dice. If the number on the dice corresponds to location on the board you have a settlement built next to you claim one of that resource. Trading and long term strategy is critical to win in settlers, but there is a large dose of luck in getting good dice rolls as well.
The game is won when a player has achieved 10 “victory points.” Something determined by number of cities/settlements, as well as a few other special conditions.
This is a fun game for all, and requires a fair bit of strategic thinking, but it isn’t as intense mentally as a game such as chess. For true strategy fans I’d say this game might be simplistic. In fact, I am really not a fan of the dice rolling mechanic used to distribute resources, because it you can lose completely to unlucky dice rolls early in the game (the most critical stage).
If you don’t take it too seriously, and just want some fun, this game is great.

Sort of like a continuingly varient, shorter duration Monop-like game without the fuss of money.

There are a lot of pieces which will likely get lost when I have kids. I love this game though.

“Great item!” 2009-09-23
By Thankful Mommy
I actually found this item used; but even missing two of the clips and with a marker line on the wooden frame, this is a great find. Love the removable trays, but my favorite part is definitely the adjustable height. The lowest height is just right for my little one, so we will definitely get good use of this easel over the next few years. I haven’t yet bought a roll of paper to go with this, but the built-in rod will be very useful for this. I agree that the chalkboard isn’t the best, but it is definitely useable. And the chalkboard paint idea is a good one, for down the road. I probably would have ended up buying this new, if I hadn’t found a used one, as it was very close to what I was looking for and near the price that I was willing to pay.

“Great for my classroom!” 2009-09-23
By M. Bonthuis (Charlottesville, VA)
I bought this for my Kindergartners. It took some time to assemble, but it is worth it. A great value and it is very sturdy and easy to collapse down to stow away. The same easel was at a local teacher store for double the price! I paid only $44 and it came with free shipping. It might have taken about a week to arrive. The trays are large and can be used in so many ways (chalkboard, white board and painting.)

“Fantastic!!” 2009-09-13
By Melissa Newberg (Waikoloa, HI)
I love this easel! It was easy to follow the directions to put together and easy to put together. The dry-erase board and the chalkboard work very well and easy to clean up. I would definitely recommend this easel!

By J. Howell (Monongahela, PA USA)
This was ordered as a birthday gift for a three year old. Sent to Germany (shipping was actually free at the time which made it even better) and received in a few days after order. Everything was in tact and she truly loves it. Putting it together was very easy and the size is very appropriate for the next few years. Great product!

“Looks great, but dosn’t work great” 2009-09-28
By J. Itkonen (Duluth, MN USA)
My daughter was so happy to find this set at Walmart (for only $15). I quickly scooped it in our cart. Once home, I put the Garage together. Like most of the other Hamster sets, it is wobbly and falls apart easily (I’m thinking of using super glue). My daughter put a Hamster in the tunnel leading to the garage and let it go to the car and garage, but the Hamster got stuck in the car. The hamster’s wheels were spinning and spinning, but would not make it through the doors. I followed the instructions, flat surface, loose garage doors, but it took 3 tries and FINALLY the hamster made it out of the garage 2 inches and then sped backwards very quickly to the garage. Okay, my daughter was then frusterated and resorted to pushing the hamster car around on the floor. Her friend came over and tried the hamster car on the kitchen floor (with out the garage). It would go forward 2 inches and speed backward 12-14 inches. Not much fun. My daughter and I are VERY dissapointedin this product. If you are looking for a fun Zhu Zhu hamster accessory try the Hamster Wheel (I found at Walmart too for $15), my daughter and I are much more satisfied with that Zhu Zhu toy (even though the tunnel to the wheel falls apart easy)One hint I would advise to avoid the high prices on Amazon, is to look at your local Wal-Mart. I found hamsters for $8, Bed & blanket for $5,the 2 room house / activity center for $20, and the garage and wheel for $15 each. If you can find an associate they may be able to let you know when the next shippment may occur. (that’s what I did). Good luck on your Zhu Zhu pet search!

“Works fine for us!” 2009-09-19
By CA Book Lover
Had to write a review too since it hasn’t been any problem for us. Ours works as shown and is cute!

“Overpriced and not worth regular price” 2009-09-13
By SDC (CA)
[…] Most of the accessories work fine, once you get them together. This one does not function as described. The hamster gets thru it but it is only successful at pushing the car out every once in a while. On a regular floor it goes backwards fine, but cannot go forward. The doors also fall off the garage. Save your money. Buy two hamsters instead, they work great!

“Doesn’t Work!” 2009-09-06
By Mom of 2 (tampa, FL)
These toys don’t work. They get stuck constantly, the plastic tubes are cheap and break very easily. My child got very frustrated and bored quickly. Don’t waste your money. If you must try this, wait until they are at Walmart or Target for $7.

“Baby takes the lid off and then crawls away….” 2009-09-23
By E. Murray (Texas)
The quality and colors are great
My one major “beef” is that the top doesn’t snap on. So when my son gets this toy he immediately takes the top off, dumps out the block and crawls away.
There is no longer a purpose for the toy. Maybe I can fashion some kind of snap on device.

“Lid does not stay on” 2009-09-22
By threekids (Stafford, VA)
Not sure if this is common for this toy or not, but the lid does not fit tightly. It is so loose that if you turn the toy upside-down, the lid comes off and the shapes fall out of it. And the fitting isn’t tall, either, so it doesn’t take much effort to dislodge the top even when it is right-side-up. Kudos for the educational value— it’s just not as durable as I need it to be for my active one-year-old.

“Great for Grandbabies” 2009-09-15
By Softmystic
I bought it for the youngest child who is now 9 months old. But my great-granddaughter who is 13 months old loved it too. And my grandson who just turned 4 had fun playing with it.

“Babies favorite toy!!!” 2009-09-15

My daughter loves this toy, bought it for her when she was 3 months old and she is now 10 months old and will play with it for hours if you let her! she doesnt do the sort thing rather likes to dump everything out after I put them in the bucket, but a must buy toy, even if its just for something for them to crawl around with, as her blocks go everywhere with her!

“Poor Design” 2009-09-27
By Shannon
We purchased this for our son just before he turned a year old. Initially we thought it would be a great toy for him to practice eye-hand coordination and to learn colors, etc. However, we were so disappointed when we started to play with this toy. The balls do move through the tube as designed and the music is festive, but once the balls pop out of the top they go flying all over the place. I spent more time chasing after the balls than my son did actually being able to enjoy the toy. In my opinion, I found having to chase after the balls each time a bit annoying. This is not a well designed toy and I would not have purchased it if I had known what a problem it was going to be. Overall it is not such a terrible toy, but there are others out there that require less work and provide more stimulation for young children than this one does.

“Outstanding” 2009-09-24
By A. Folden (Dallas, TX USA)
We bought this toy for our daughter about three years ago and she loved it. We were going through her old toys and found it so we gave it to our ten month old twins. They too love it, they beat it up knock it over and it just keeps running. However, if you have a dog be weary of the balls our dog destroyed all but one of them.

“This sucker is LOUD” 2009-09-24
By K. Pudenz (Minnesota)
I got this toy for my son for Christmas last year when he was 7 months old. He was afraid of it because of the noise (it sounds like a very loud vacuum cleaner). I was also not impressed with the narrowness of it - very easy for an eager infant to knock it over. I put it away in the closet and got it out again at 10 and 12 months. Both times, he was frightened of the noise and I had to put it away again. When the balls do “pop” they don’t fall nicely in the tray that is provided, they hit it and bounce out and go all over the place. Don’t waste your money.

“fun toy” 2009-09-23
By jadegal (ca)
My 9-month-old seems to like this toy alright…at first the loud noise that it makes scares her; but after a while, she got used to it and is now ok with it. This toy should come with extra balls, in case the original 5 get lost as they bounce around so much, most of the time they don’t hit the plate…
note: if there are not 5 balls in the queue it’s not enough force to pop the rest…
I think 4 D cell batteries is a lot for this toy…especially if your kid plays with it a lot..will need to replace the batteries really fast…but then again, it probably requires that many in order to force the balls to pop out…

“great toy, just supervise” 2009-09-20
By William E. Nelson Jr. (Alexander, Ar USA)
We got this toy for our daughters first christmas, she was about 7months old. It has been a big hit with her. We long have lost some of the balls, but it matters not to her , she loves the noise. She also likes putting other items in it. She is 17 months now and lately she has been getting her hand stuck in it. Her grandmother witnessed her getting her arm stuck, and I did another time, but it wasnt stuck too bad. then the other day when putting her down for a nap we heard her screaming and hollering, thought it was her normal nap fit after about 5 minutes we checked on her, she had her arm stuck up to past her elbow! it is going in the trash now. as I said this is a great toy, just be in the room and watch them, probably better for those under one. I think the toddlers are too advanced for this and can get into trouble

“Great for the whole family!” 2009-09-20
By A. Dawson (Texas)
My 8 year old received this as a gift and it has been alot of fun. We sit down a few nights a week and play. It’s fun for all ages and has helped our chidren with, both, learning words and spelling them. I would definately recommend the toy.

“So simple, so addictive, so WONDERFUL!!!” 2009-09-16
By R. Lanthier (Vienna, VA United States)
Bananagrams is a brilliant game. It gets rid of some of the problems of Scrabble (the interminable length of some games or turns!) by making speed an issue. You can vary how you play the game and it is fun for kids (older for sure) to play as well. We spent many after dinner hours this summer playing the game as a family. Even my wife who HATES HATES HATES games got hooked on this one. If you are at all interested in word games, you will be hooked on Bananagrams after your first round. So simple! Perfect, get it! Wish I had thought of it…

“Lots of fun” 2009-09-13
By C. Young (San Antonio, TX)
I really like this game. I find it much more fun than Scrabble because it is fast moving. The players are all working at the same time on making words from their own letter tiles.
Each player draws a set number of letter tiles and tries to make connecting words with them. As soon as a player uses up his letters he says “peel” and everyone draws another letter and continues to try to use up their letters. The winner is the first player to use up all his letters after all the letters are drawn.

“Scrabble without the board” 2009-09-11
By Teach (Virginia)
As a sixth grade English teacher, I was looking for a word game that could be played by 4-6 kids and that doesn’t take an hour to play. The variations can be played in as little as 5-10 minutes, and there is not much score-keeping involved. Lots of fun for all ages!

“bananagrams hits sweet spot” 2009-09-11
By JRR (Cupertino, CA United States)
I rcd this game as a gift, and I like it enough to purchase as gift for several other people. I was invited to review the product because I purchased another one via Amazon to send to a friend.
I play Bananagrams with my teenagers.
It’s like Scrabble, but can be played in 15 min instead of 1.5 hours. Play four short games instead of one long one.
Also, more recently I rcd a Scrabble-brand Apple game. I judge Bananagrams game is better to play and more durable than the Scrabble-Apple game.

“Be careful” 2009-09-25
By M. Foster (SE, Mass)
Be careful who you are buying from. Realize that Amazon isn’t the one charging these prices. It is the sellers. Definitely do your homework because in some cases the sellers are charging 3xs the retail value for these toys simply because they are popular. I personally do not think Amazon should allow such sellers because it does turn people off to this site and if they are legit sellers they really do not need to be taking advantage of people.
Great toy. Wait it out and you’ll get one for ten dollars or less.

“Wait till the prices come down, then buy” 2009-09-12
By Thomas B. Lanigan (weston, FL USA)
I brought the hamsters at TrU for $[…] each. The toys are cute but only worth the original retail price. The prices charged by the third party re-sellers are heavily marked up. The manufacturer gets no benefit from this situation as it causes bad will against the company and the product. Ditto for Amazon. I bet that the manufacturer is ramping up production as fast as possible and that these will be in stock in huge numbers pretty soon and those who brought out the first inventory will be forced to reduce their prices for the toys they still have. Such is the law of supply and demand. These will certainly be available before Christmas.

“Amazon is a rip-off” 2009-09-06
By Laurie Ann Thon
I verified the above review and in some cases,Amazon is charging 6 times more than Toys R Us. Check out the 3 hamster set at Toys R Us for 22.99. Amazon is selling it for $139.98!!!! I used to buy all of my Christmas presents from Amazon. Not anymore!

“Learned My Lesson This Time!” 2009-09-04
By Busy Mom (USA)
Ok I admit I spoil my kids! When they see these ZHU ZHU PETS on TV, they of course want them and I cave and off we go looking LITERALLY ALL OVER TOWN TRYING TO FIND THEM! We must have went to 8-10 stores and have YET TO FIND AN ACTUAL ZHU ZHU PET HAMSTER! Most stores don’t even have an empty rack as they must not be carrying them yet! And three of the stores were Toyrus and each one said they can’t keep them on the shelves.
Six Hours Later, We did finally find one lone ADVENTURE BALL for which we now have with no Zhu Zhu pet yet! But we did try it out with the neighbors Zhu Zhu Hamster and it is Hilarious as it acts like a Real Hamster in The Adventure Ball. So as I always do whether it’s Bakugan, Littlest Pet Shop, Star Wars, Barbie, and now Zhu Zhu Pets I end up WASTING TONS of TIME and GAS MONEY trying to find them at Multiple Stores when I should have Just Paid A Little Extra and Had them Shipped Right To my Door by Buying them off Amazon…Oh well, Live and Learn I Guess!

“Great for my autistic son” 2009-09-28
By Kim (Boston, MA)
I preordered this for my autistic son’s 14th birthday and was happy that it arrived before his big day. The biggest praise I can give to this game is that it actually SLOWED MY SON DOWN and kept him in place for more than 5 minutes!!! He was fascinated with it and it instantly had him in tune with his speed, concentration, etc. He says it’s the best gift he’s ever received, and it gave US the gift of time while he actually occupied himself with something for an extended period on his own—thrilling!! He did have a temporary dent in his forehead where the sensor lay, although we checked the headband repeatedly to make sure that it didn’t feel too tight. It would be easy for the components to get lost—we’d suggest putting balls and obstacle pieces into a zip-lock bag and returning everything to its original box each time. I think that a toy that can help special needs kids tap into more awareness of their own space and rhythms is a wonderful thing.

“VERY Disappointed” 2009-09-25
By William M. Fleischer (New York, NY)
I was so excited when I saw this thing that I literally ordered two of them, expecting that they’d all sell out before the holidays and I could make a fortune on Ebay. So I bought one for myself, and one to sell later.
Big mistake. I knew that the little ball was controlled by a fan, and the fan was supposed to be controled by EEG readings from the headset thing. I knew that you could only move the ball up or down. Even with these things, I still was VERY excited.
This thing didn’t work at ALL for me. I played with it for 2 hours, desperately trying to make the fan speed change based on my concentrating or relaxing. All I got was completely random fluctuations of the fan speed. I even lied down next to the console, closed my eyes, relaxed, tried to completely clear my mind…and the fan was revvvvving, revvvving, then stopping, then revv revvvvv, then slowing, then stopping, then reeevvvvvv….all while I was just about as relaxed as I could be.
So my theory is that the fan will go off randomly (becuase the technology does not work) and anyone could still navigate the ball through the an obstacle course—-because at some point, the ball will be at the height you need, then you just turn a knob.
I’m VERY disappointed. I was psyched that they would have actually pulled this off. Not even close. I’m out probably about $50 as a result—after restocking fee, lost shipping cost, and return shipping cost. VERY UPSET about this.

“Great Demo” 2009-09-22
By J. Peterson
I was able to try this at GenCon this year. It took about 5 seconds to learn how it works and then the rest of the 5 minute demo flew by as I was trying to just focus on the challenge. Interesting game to say the least. My only negative is that there isn’t any multi-player option. (other than timing each other to see how far you can get in the course in a set time)

“Mind bending fun” 2009-09-19
By L. Jagiello (iowa)
This is a great game!!! The only problem is the headband is so tight. There is a senser over the left temple and with the tight band you can get a headache. Once you adjust and strech the headband, it is awesome. Really makes you concentrate and become aware of how your body reacts to stress.
